Londons Tunn

$5.00

 1. The London Underground (The Tube)

Not exactly a mystery, but the oldest metro system in the world (opened in 1863) has plenty of secrets:

  • Abandoned Stations: Dozens of stations lie forgotten, like Down Street, which Churchill used as a WWII bunker, or Aldwych, sometimes used for filming or testing.
  • Ghost Stories: Workers and passengers have reported strange sightings, especially in stations like Bethnal Green (site of a tragic WWII crush disaster).

 2. Tower of London Tunnels

There are real and rumored tunnels beneath the Tower of London:

  • Escape Routes: Legend tells of secret passages to the Thames for executions or covert movements of prisoners.
  • Hauntings: Given its grim history, the Tower's underground is prime ghost story territory—Anne Boleyn’s spirit is said to roam, head tucked under her arm.

 3. The River Fleet Tunnels

The River Fleet, once a major river, is now hidden in underground tunnels flowing beneath streets like Farringdon Road. It’s one of London’s “lost rivers,” buried in Victorian brickwork:

  • Some say you can hear it flowing beneath grates.
  • Occasional rumors claim it's haunted, or used by secret societies for midnight rituals.

 4. Templar Tunnels

Yes, the Knights Templar left their mark in London too:

  • Temple Church in central London was their base.
  • Legends whisper of hidden passages beneath the church, possibly storing relics or connecting to secret sites.
  • Some even suggest there are still undiscovered tunnels leading from Temple to the Thames or Westminster.

 5. Plague Pits and Crypts

During the Great Plague of 1665, bodies were buried en masse in “plague pits”:

  • Charterhouse Square and Aldgate are known sites.
  • Some believe there are sealed passages beneath old cemeteries and churches where victims were moved or hidden.
  • There’s urban folklore about “zombie rats” and cursed tunnels (bit far-fetched, but very London).

 6. Mail Rail

One of London’s coolest hidden gems: the Post Office Railway, aka Mail Rail.

  • A secret underground railway used from 1927 to 2003 to move mail under London.
  • It ran from Paddington to Whitechapel.
  • You can now ride part of it at the Postal Museum!

 7. Urban Legends: The Government Bunkers

  • Pindar Bunker under Whitehall is real and still secretive—it’s said to be connected by tunnels to 10 Downing Street and Buckingham Palace.
  • Q-Whitehall Tunnels: WWII-era tunnels used as wartime shelters and command centers.
  • Conspiracy theories abound about deep-level shelters and “shadow cities” below London.
